Founder and Director, Barefoot College

SANJIT 'BUNKER' ROY is the founder of Barefoot College, which helps rural communities become self sufficient.

Established in 1972 in Tilonia, Rajasthan, Barefoot College is a non-governmental organization, that has been providing basic services, and solutions to problems in rural communities with the objective of making them self-sufficient and sustainable. These 'Barefoot' solutions can be categorized into the delivery of solar electrification, clean water, education, livelihood development, healthcare, and more.

The dual focus of Barefoot College is the Least Developed Countries; and empowering women as facilitators of sustainable change.

Bunker Roy's inspiration is Mahatma Gandhi. More specifically, “…be the change you wish to see in the world.” The College has adopted Gandhian ideas into its lifestyle and ethics, holding it true and relevant universally, even in the 21st Century.

Today, the College is training illiterate and semi-literate, poor, rural women from 32 countries to become Barefoot Solar Engineers.

We salute Mr. Bunker Roy. Our Qimpro Platinum Standard 2012 for Education.
