DR S RAJASEKARAN, Chairman, Department of Orthopaedics & Spine Surgery, Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore is best known for his unique ‘Low Cost / High Quality’ Surgical Model. He is the Founder of a 650-bed orthopaedic unit that performs nearly 26,000 surgeries every year, of which more than 6,500 are subsidised or free. This unit is the largest in South Asia.
In 2012, Dr Rajasekaran had the rare distinction of being appointed as the HUNTERIAN Professor of Royal College of Surgeons in England. He was and is the second Indian Orthopaedician to earn this honour in over 60 years. This honour was in recognition of his challenging research ‘Growth Modulation of Pediatric Spinal Deformities’.
Dr Rajasekaran has several global recognitions. He was presented the prestigious Harvard Award for Medical Excellence by Harvard Medical International, Boston. Outstanding achievement. Also, he has delivered keynote addresses for Orthopaedic Associations in the UK, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Australia, South Africa, Kenya, and the UAE.
Dr Rajasekaran was the first South Asian to be appointed as President of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, Canada. He is currently the President of the Asia Pacific Spine Society. Stanford University has placed Dr Rajasekaran as the Top 1% of contributing global researchers in orthopaedic surgery.
Dr Rajasekaran developed the Ganga Hospital Open Injury Score, which has been adopted globally for treatment of severely injured limbs. Making India proud.
International organizations recognize Ganga Hospital as a formal training centre. These organizations include SICOT; British Orthopaedic Association; International AOSpine; Asia Pacific Spine Society; Japanese Society for Spine Surgery and Related Research; and World Orthopaedic Concern. Dr Rajasekaran has contributed to society with ‘Project Helpline’ and ‘Project Straight Spine’. Through these projects, 4,500 patients, below the poverty line, have been cured of deformity of limbs and spine.
