DR R V RAMANI, Founder & Managing Trustee, Sankara Eye Foundation, Coimbatore. Sankara Foundation has successfully established 10 super speciality eye hospitals, across seven states, in India.
The first Sankara Hospital (SEH) was established four decades back. Today, the ten hospitals collectively have 2,200 beds for community eye care. Each hospital practices a 80:20 principle. 80 percent of the patients from rural areas are treated free. The balance 20 percent, from the middle-income strata, are charged. This serves to cross-subsidize the free surgeries.
Dr Ramani, and his wife, Dr Radha are full-time committed to the SEHs. They are one of the most accomplished Doctor Couples in Coimbatore. Further, they provide their services in an honorary capacity. Notable humanitarians.
Sankara Eye Hospitals have so far performed 1.9 million totally free eye surgeries. Their rural and tribal patients now enjoy a better quality of life — occupational, social, and health.
Dr Ramani initiated a rural outreach eye care program, GIFT OF VISION, with Rotary Coimbatore Central, in 1990. This program currently serves the rural population in 92 districts across 7 states in India. Gift of Vision has conducted over 27,000 rural outreach camps, screened 5 million people, and performed 1.9 million vision restoration surgeries.
In addition, in 1996, Dr Ramani established RAINBOW, a preventive eye care program for children. RAINBOW has screened over 6.2 million school children for undetected visual defects. Where required, has provided free spectacles and / or surgeries.
Dr Ramani has a bold vision: To serve the underprivileged nation-wide, by establishing one eye care hospital in every state of India.
Dr Ramani. Atireless crusader. Gentle in demeanour. Strong in execution.
We congratulate Dr RV Ramani. Our Qimpro Gold Standard 2019 for Healthcare.
