Dr Farokh E Udwadia

,

Physician, Breach Candy Hospital Trust

Dr Farokh Erach Udwadia, Consultant Physician and Consultant-in-Charge (Intensive Care Unit), Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, has the reputation of a detective-healer. He is considered so impossibly good that the closest comparison of this legend is to the fictional character, Sherlock Homes. There is enough empirical evidence to state that Dr Udwadia is the benchmark general physician in India.

The academic distinctions, scholarships, prizes and medals awarded to Dr Udwadia at both the MBBS and MD examinations by the University of Bombay are a record. In 1969, at 38 years, Dr Udwadia was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. The youngest Indian ever to be so elected.

Dr Udwadia is a good doctor in the way that family doctors were once good. What differentiates him is his mastery of a craft, few men of medicine practice today: bedside diagnosis. He asks questions. And then empathetically listens. This legendary doctor looks like he is never in a hurry.

The wisdom of Dr Udwadia is captured in the 10 seminal books authored by him. These books have been published over the past three decades. In addition, he has over 50 publications in international and national journals, primarily in Respiratory Medicine, Tropical Eosinophillia, Tetnus and Critical Care Medicine.

In his book The Forgotten Art of Healing and Other Essays, he wrote 'Medicine is learnt and taught at the bedside by listening and talking to patients, by touching and examining them…'

Over the past 15 years, Dr Udwadia has been a Visiting Professor to Brompton Hospital, London; and the National Institute of Health, Washington. When Dr Udwadia speaks, the audience listens.

In 1987, Dr Udwadia was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his Contribution to Medicine.

We salute Dr Farokh Erach Udwadia. Our Qimpro Platinum Standard 2016 for Healthcare.
