Dr Shiv Dutt Gupta, Director, Indian Institute of Health Management Research, Jaipur, is an evangelist for public health in India and South East Asia. He is an outstanding a researcher, teacher and institution builder in his field.
Dr Gupta has a soft yet firm style of leadership. He has built an organization on the singular value of “trustworthiness”. Dr Gupta directs a flat organization of empowered employees, built on an infrastructure of transparent systems. The IIHMR is now a WHO Collaborating Center for District Health Systems. The institute is also a partner of John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health for promoting research, education and training in public health – internationally.
Dr Gupta has had deep global footprints. He has been Advisor to WHO South-East Asia Regional Office, and Secretary General of South East Asian Public Health Education Institutes Network. He has also served as member of the Technical Review Panel of the Global Fund for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
Over the past three decades, Dr Gupta has conducted over one hundred research projects on public health, epidemiology, population, reproductive health, nutrition, and health management. Most of these projects have been published in reputed Indian and international journals.
Dr Gupta’s contribution to the betterment of rural India is noteworthy. He led a successful integrated safe water and sanitation project for 350 villages in Rajasthan. The metamorphosis of these villages is a benchmark for public health in desert regions.
p>Dr Gupta is also an effective teacher. Apart from teaching epidemiology, and health and hospital management at the IIHMR, he has also taught the same at the John Hopkins University and University of North Carolina.
Dr Gupta has a laser sharp vision for IIHMR. He is determined to position the institution as a benchmark for public health, internationally.
