RUPINDER SINGH SODHI, Managing Director, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (Amul), is an accomplished Transformation Management professional. He has a native understanding of the dairy products market and customer needs; as well as extraordinary skills for supply chain management of these products. Consequently, since liberalization, Mr Sodhi has successfully and innovatively engineered the expansion of Amul’s product portfolio to combat competition.

Mr Sodhi has numerous achievements to his credit. Noteworthy amongst these are: introducing IT enabled customer care services; launching youth friendly Amul Flavored Milk and Amul Lassi in reusable PET bottles; implementing 100 percent quality checking on high-speed glass bottle packing line; launching Amul Flaavyo probiotic fruit based flavored yogurt; adopting green technology; increasing bulk milk coolers deployment in villages; and automating paneer manufacture. All significant for competitiveness.

Mr Sodhi is a man with a mission. His mission: The transformation of Amul from a trusted Indian brand to a preferred global brand.

To achieve global standards, Mr Sodhi has focused on quality as a business strategy, proficiently using the Hoshin Kanri methodology. His competence in quality management has been the elixir for transforming the organizational culture to global standards. Amul has recorded more than 500,000 kaizens since commencement of the internal quality revolution. He has also institutionalized the solving of chronic problems by cross-functional teams.

Through Mr Sodhi’s sensitive leadership, the milk procurement price paid to farmers was proactively increased by 40 percent, over three years. Further, the sales turnover of GCMMF grew by 70 per cent over the same period.
