Dr Pawan Goenka, Executive Director & President, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, is often referred to as the ‘Father of the Scorpio’. He is acknowledged internationally as an expert in automotive design, development, engineering and manufacturing. Dr Goenka uses his left-brain scientific thinking to its full potential. His ability to engage his left-brain with his creative right-brain is what makes him exceptional.
Dr Goenka believes that R&D must be a key core competency of any auto company. In conjunction, he believes in reliability engineering; building quality into design. For Dr Goenka, the Bolero to Scorpio project was the most exhilarating one in his career. His team was engaged from understanding customer needs to Scorpio design to constructing the manufacturing plant. End to end. Today, Scorpio has international footprints. Made in India.
Currently, the scope of Dr Goenka’s responsibilities include the businesses of: SUVs, commercial vehicles, two wheelers, and tractors. Each has a unique mix of target customers, and therefore, business strategy. A mega strategy adopted by Dr Goenka is to consolidate several common processes, for competitive advantage: sourcing, logistics, IT, and talent management. As a result, Mahindra & Mahindra has text-book supply-chain management capability.
Dr Goenka started his career with General Motors, Detroit. He is credited with pioneering research in engine design and development. His methods for the analyses of engine bearings and engine friction are practiced at General Motors, 25 years after.
The modest Dr Goenka is a Distinguished Alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, USA. Currently, he is Chairman, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
